Joanna Wakefield b. 1954, United Kingdom. Arrived Australia 1981
STATEMENT
The urge to express feelings, emotions and experiences is a strong motivation demonstrated in prehistoric art. It is direct, simplistic and extremely powerful as language had not yet been formed. Influence for Joanna's work comes from ancient civilisations, prehistoric and African art.
In many eastern and third world cultures, women's aging is seen as a celebration of achievement and a command of respect. In western society it appears as the opposite. Joanna's work identifies with heritage, rituals, myths and spirituality.
