ROSE VAN DER WAAG

b. 1943, Holland.  Arrived Australia 1966.

STATEMENT

Van der Waag is born of a textile artist mother and a professional stained glass artist father, with four siblings who are also artists.  She herself is recognised for the use of found objects in installation exhibitions and jewellery, both as an artist and exhibitor.

Van der Waag began developing her broad range of technical skills at Artibus, the Academy of Fine Arts in Utrecht, where she graduated as a textile designer.  She later undertook post-graduate studies at ASRI (University of Fine Art) in Jojakarta through an inaugural Netherlands-Indonesia Cultural Student Exchange.

Today, van der Waag is not afraid to be outspoken in her art – attacking both the intolerance of community to minorities and the airs sometimes assumed by those in ‘high art’. She is a very strong advocate for conservation and most recently has devoted much of her energy and advocacy to wildlife care and the preservation and rehabilitation of local flora.

Van der Waag has travelled widely throughout Europe, the Middle East, south Asia, and central and South America. She has taught art in the Nertherlands, Papua New Guinea and Western Australia at primary, secondary, vocational, tertiary and adult education levels.  Most significantly, she has contributed to the development of art and art practice in the local communities of which she has been a part, not only through her role as a lecturer and teacher, but also as a curator of exhibitions and contributor to local arts organizations.

EXHIBITIONS / CURATION / COLLECTIONS

Van der Waag has presented a number of solo exhibitions and has been a member of many group exhibitions. She has curated exhibitions that have toured Western Australia.  Her own work has been exhibited in Australia, Japan and Indonesia, and is in private collections throughout the world.
