MITSUE SLATTERY

b. 1957 Japan.  Arrived Australia 1997.

STATEMENT

Prior to moving to Australia in 1997, Slattery studied traditional Japanese Noh mask making under the guidance of AyaIwai in Kyoto, Japan.

Since arriving in Australia, Slattery has focussed her studies on jewellery making.  In 2001 she completed a Diploma of Jewellery Design and Production and then in 2002 an Advanced Diploma of Art and Design (Jewellery) at the TAFE Western Australian School of Art, Design and Media.

Slattery is inspired by the wind in her jewellery making.  She enjoys the feeling of air surrounding and running though her body, like when wind blows in the park. While wanting to make some form of wind, she says she has ‘not been able to see it with the eyes in her heart yet’.  For now, however, she draws on fragments from nature to relate to her feeling of wind, like a curled up leaf on the road, as inspirations for her interpretation of the blowing wind. The hope that she will see the wind with the eyes of her heart some time is never far away.
