SERENA McLAUCHLAN

b. 1978 Albany, Western Australia

STATEMENT

Serena McLauchlan spent her formative years in Albany. She completed Honours in Visual Arts at Edith Cowan University in 2000 and attained High Distinctions during six months of study at the Amsterdam Academy of Fine Arts in the Netherlands in 1999.

Serena works with a minimal colour palette.  Translucent layers of paint and wax are scraped and poured over the painting’s surface to reveal/conceal areas of working, with each decision being based on visual logic, formal concerns and an aim to create paintings that push the possibilities of the painting process.

The monochromatic nature of her paintings may have specific references to colour as object, or evoke general memory/sensory experiences of place, smell and taste.

She draws on comment on her works by David Bromfield (2002) when describing her work and referencing it to wine…"A field of evenly graded paint texture or light can stand for the entire riches of the universe. It can arouse infinite desire.  This infinity can also become the mirror for that supremely detached sensuality that can only express itself in luxuriant erotic excess, an optical overflow, like good wine poured over the tongue till the mouth is full."
