ALLEN KENNEDY

b. 1966 Perth, Western Australia

STATEMENT

Kennedy spent his formative years in country Western Australia and completed a Bachelor of Arts (visual arts) at Edith Cowan University in 1997.

Kennedy’s endeavor is to empower the viewer through the freedom of objective viewpoint.  His work concentrates on paintings as objects, where representation of a subject matter is not apparent and the physical artwork displayed becomes the subject for personal interpretation by the viewer.  He resists naming artwork as this provides undesired opportunity for contextual interpretation by the viewer within a set of pre-conceived ideas and paradigms emanating from exterior sources rather than from the true inner self.

Kennedy’s inspiration for painting comes from the environment and landscape, urban or rural. He is particularly interested in the way the human species imposes itself on the environment, not from an environmental impact perspective, but more from the ‘leaving our mark’ or ‘marking our territory’ perspective.
