The ALSQ was founded by Mike Hyder (1st violin), Glenda Lindsey (2nd violin) and Julie Parish (cello) in 2000. Gabrielle Scherrer (viola) departed in mid-2002 to be replaced by Margaret Gunson. Emma Luxton (cello) came to Albany in late 2002, and performed the Schubert Quintet with the ALSQ in July 2004.
About the players
Margaret Gunson (viola) Margaret studied violin at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music with Jan Sedivka, followed by further studies at the North-West German Music Academy with the late renowned violinist Tibor Varga. After working in an Opera Orchestra in Northern Germany, Margaret played with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (1979-80) before falling in love in, and with, Western Australia where she settled in 1981, raising a family and playing with the WASO where she eventually held a principal position. She also played with various chamber and contemporary ensembles and taught for the UWA and the Conservatorium of WA.
Following several years of sulking following a car accident in 1995 which left her unable to play the violin, Margaret finally settled in Albany WA where she now plays the viola upside-down in the Albany String Quartet. She and Mike Hyder run the enormously successful Just Fiddling (44 fiddles at last count!). She now spends her days happily encouraging young people to torture cat-gut with horsehair and enjoy the experience.
Julie Parish (cello) Julie completed a Bachelor of Education (Hons) majoring in English and Music at St Martin’s College, Lancaster, UK in 1985. Since migrating to Australia in 1990, she has taught Cello for the Department of Education and Training’s School of Instrumental Music, and since moving to Albany in 2000, she has taught all instruments of the string family.
Julie has studied with Jon Tooby and Jill Cooper, and gained her Associate Diploma in Cello in 2001. In April 2003, she attended the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove, Cornwall (UK), observing masterclasses and concerts by cellists Steven Isserlis and Ralph Kirschbaum.
Julie has given recitals for the Mundaring Performing Arts Society and performs regularly in Albany with pianist Patrick Elms and violinist Mike Hyder. She is a keen supporter of community music in Albany and is involved in several community music groups including the Albany Choral Society and the Albany Sinfonia.
Julie is co-founder of the Albany String Quartet which has performed regularly for local audiences at major community events. She is conductor and musical director of the Albany Youth Orchestra whose recent concerts have included highly successful collaborations with:
- West Australian Secondary Strings Orchestra
- West Australian Symphony Orchestra cellist Jon Tooby
- West Australian Symphony Orchestra cellist Jon Tooby
